The Press Bogey Is All Relative

The media has been having a field day with the news that child poverty has risen for the first time since The Great Leader came to power. That clearly shows that journalists don't get the maths education they once did. The measure of child poverty, under which the estimated number has risen from 3.6 million to 3.8 million, is a relative one. So if the rest of us become fabulously wealthy, the poor will appear to become poorer, even though they are actually much wealthier themselves. What's difficult to understand about that? We've all got yachts, eat foie gras and drink Bolly. They've all got broadband, watch HD-ready flat screen TV and drive BMWs. So, relatively speaking, they are poorer. To accuse the Chancellor of being uncaring, insensitive and unconcerned about child poverty in Britain is patently absurd.

Let them eat cake
