I Hear You Knocking...

Here comes a Chopper to Chop off your HeadSpooky. I must have been more affected by the television news this evening than I thought I was. Although I didn't it notice myself, Linda told me afterwards that when I read Augustus his goodnight nursery rhyme, a few words weren't quite right.

"Our fees are quite heavy" say the Bells of Lord Levy

"You owe me some green sheet" say the Bells of Old Queen Street

"When will you repay me?" say the Bells of Old Bailey

"When I grow rich" say the Bells of Shoreditch

"When will that be?" say the Bells of Stepney

"I do not know" say the Great Bells of Bow

"Here comes John Yates to light you to Bed

"Here comes a Chopper to Chop off your Head

"Chip chop chip chop - the Great Leader's Dead."

I'm presuming Chopper refers to John 'Chopper' Reid. Is this correct?

Far be it for me to speculate on who may replace The Great Leader, although it is known in private circles that I have a two-way covering bet at Ladbrokes involving people whose codenames are "John" and "David".

Do not assume anything from the repetition of the original Victorian term "chopper" other than the fact that "brains" didn't rhyme.
