The Merger

The PM consults the T&G General SecretaryI voted for the merger between my union Amicus and the TGWU so I'm pleased by the ballot result today. The new union, which will represent a third of all trades unionists in Britain, will come into effect on May 1st, a nice traditional day for Labour Party members to attend car boot sales and visit Tescos.

The T&G was once the world's biggest union and had a reputation as a militant organisation, although most of its General Secretaries made me look relatively left-wing.

Former GS Ron Todd was born in Walthamstow, where he learnt his politics, so we have something in common as I expect to die there politically. Unfortunately, the GMB, also involved in the merger talks, told both Amicus and the T&G to f**k off.

I understand they are considering the name "afuckingbigunion" (AFBU) for the newly merged enterprise. I like that - it's got an earthy ring to it that should appeal in the pubs and clubs.
