Wotsisname Quits

Jack McConnell is expected to confirm tomorrow that he is standing down, more than three months after losing the Scottish election to Alex Salmond's SNP. Despite valiant efforts to boost Uncle Jack's image across the border, this sort of thing didn't help. Nor, of course, did the disastrous "rabbit in the headlights" interview he gave to Newsnight Scotland before the Scottish elections, in which he stumbled from irrelevant point to admission of failure, despite relatively straightforward and non-threatening questioning.

But of all the problems for poor old Uncle Jack, it was this interview that finally did for him. Having a walking Cabinet disaster who is herself about to be fired treat you with such disrespect that she can't even remember your name is a signal that the clock is whirring and clicking and time is running out.

Tonight the clock has stopped.

You were right! Uncle Jack will now be fighting for the united empire and against national independence in his new role as High Commissioner of Malawi.
