Despite my best attempts to convince my fellow LCER member and MP for Birmingham Ladywood to remain in the PLP, she has decided to step down.
There are no grounds for rejoicing. Clare's obdurate refusal to adhere to collective Cabinet responsibility, her resignation tantrums and her general views on everything except electoral reform have been a wonderful beacon of distraction in the Party.
As long as she doesn't go too far and call for people to vote against the Labour Government in a general election, I'll be happy to see her stay in the PLP.
For as long as people like Clare have been associated with the government and parliamentary party, the ship has looked balanced. With her gone, it's listing badly to starboard and making people like me stand out like a bunch of sore thumbs. I'll miss her chirpy figure at LCER fringe meetings. Still, at least my good friends Joan Ruddock and Glenda Jackson will still be around.

You are right to support Clare. She has been a beacon of principle and decency in the Labour Party and the fact that she clung onto power when she should have resigned months earlier is testament to this. Good luck to you Clare, wherever you toss your hat.
